Maintaining high NHS standards

The NHS is an institution woven into the fabric of the UK, treating over one million patients every 36 hours. This is possible due to the 16% of nurses working in hospitals and community health services from countries other than Britain.

The University of Northampton's Test of Competence Centre (CTC) assesses the clinical skills of nurses and midwives who trained outside the country, and is the largest and longest established CTC in England and Northern Ireland.

It has tested more than 6,000 nurses and midwives since opening its doors in 2014, ensuring that the millions of people who use the NHS every year are treated by health professionals whose abilities have been checked and approved.
